Discussions will focus on how to foster research that is relevant both in academic circles as well as for policy and advocacy communities, how to build research collaborations with advocacy organizations that might be conducting research or have access to significant datasets, and how to bring more and diverse researchers and academics, particularly emerging talent, into internet governance conversations and spaces. The final session of the program will feature an open roundtable to discuss the role of academics (and GIGANET) in the wider internet governance and policymaking context.

AGENDA: 

2:00-3:30: Panel and Discussion on the Challenges to and Value of Interdisciplinary Research: 

  • Collin Anderson, Independent Researcher focused on Internet controls and restrictions on communications, including network ownership, disruption of access and regulatory regimes, with an emphasis on countries that limit the free flow of information.
  • Jackie Kerr, Science, Technology, and Public Policy (STPP) Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University
  • Bill Marczak, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of California, Berkeley and Founder of Bahrain Watch
  • Steve Song, Wireless researcher with the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC).

5:15-6:00: Final Discussion: The Role of Academics in Internet Governance (GIGANET researchers):

  • Daniel Oppermann, postdoc researcher at the Institute of Economy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IE-UFRJ).
