With the GigaNET elections fast approaching, I wish to supplement my seconded nomination for the role of the Communication Officer with the following statement:
I joined GigaNet in 2012 and I have been always fascinated by the prospect of building and sustaining an academic network devoted to Internet Governance. Since then, I have been involved with IG wearing many hats: From 2013 onwards, I am deeply honoured to act as ISOC's Ambassador and become more engaged with particular areas of interest through attending various DC meetings. At the same time, I am a Senior Lecturer in IT & Media Law at the Centre of Intellectual Property Policy & Management, Media School (Bournemouth University, UK). The latter perhaps explains well why I firmly believe that academics should be more actively involved in IG and internet related policy making. GigaNET's vision, as I understand it, is exactly this and I would be to support this in any way I can. The role of the Communications Officer presents a particular challenge and is thus very appealing to me: connecting people is not easy- connecting academics accross a global and transdisciplinary spectrum is already hard to do; yet, enabling them to interact, produce and demonstrate tangible outputs seems almost impossible. I am willing to take up on this challenge, to learn from the experience of previous post holders and to work together with the SC towards hopefully bring some new perspectives -an improved website, to begin with. This is a vibrant community, whose members are all research active and experts on a wide range of ICT related areas - openess, collaborative spirit and access to specialised knowledge should thus be top priorities for building a communicatory platform: Interactive collaborations among the GigaNET community could be anything from a podcast, a recorded Google hangout, a Twitter Q&A, a remote book sprint, a MOOC, an IG chat roullette, an online agora of contemporary academia in IG - imagination and creativity online knows no limits.
The future of GigaNET and its potential objectives will surely monopolise discussions in the months to come. The perspective of being elected to serve as Comms Officer would grant me the opportunity to facilitate such discussions in the best possible manner and to hopefully contribute towards enhancing the visibility of GigaNET as a central hub in IG.
